We Need Builders

We Need Builders: The 5 Critical Roles

AAGHSC is sustained by the work of members who choose to lead. The five critical builder roles represent the areas where leadership, organization, and commitment are needed most—membership engagement, digital community building, website and content management, preservation of records, and community partnerships. Each role supports a different part of the Society, but together they ensure that our programs continue, our history is preserved, and our community grows. If we expect AAGHSC to endure, we must move beyond participation and into stewardship—because strong organizations are built, not maintained.

Membership Engagement Lead

  • Helps welcome new members, improve retention, and create low-friction entry points for beginners and returning researchers.

Focus:

  • Beginner workshops
  • Welcome process
  • Follow-up with visitors
  • Membership growth

Digital Community & Social Media Chair

  • Help us build community beyond the monthly meeting.

Today’s genealogists are not waiting in church basements for quarterly newsletters—they are on Bluesky, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Discord, and Ancestry, looking for answers, stories, and connection.

This role helps AAGHSC meet researchers where they already are.

Focus Areas:

  • Bluesky Genealogy Lists, including “Starter Packs” (e.g., My first searches after the Great Migration)
  • Facebook group engagement
  • YouTube content and genealogy storytelling
  • TikTok short-form ancestor stories and research tips
  • Reddit and Discord community outreach
    • Member spotlights and ancestor success stories
    • “I took a DNA test—now what?” beginner content
    • Social media strategy that creates participation, not just announcements

We are not looking for someone to simply post meeting reminders.

We need someone who understands how to turn curiosity into community.
